Foundations of Collage: Paper & Composition
Discover the possibilities of paper collage in this introductory course designed to build foundational skills in composition, color, visual storytelling, and the principles of design. Each week, students will explore a different collage technique inspired by the work of a contemporary artist, while developing their own creative vocabulary through hands-on experimentation. Beginning with the fundamentals of cutting, layering, arranging, and adhering paper, students will learn how to create compositions using found imagery, printed materials, painted papers, photographs, and other two dimensional media. Weekly projects will introduce techniques such as photomontage, alteration, weaving, fragmentation, repetition, abstraction, and mixed-media collage. Throughout the course, students will examine how contemporary artists use collage to manipulate imagery, challenge perception, and create new narratives, encouraging students to develop confidence with materials and composition. No prior collage experience is required. This class is designed for beginners as well as artists looking to expand their understanding of collage and contemporary image-making.
