Stephanie Lane: Meta Physika
Deeply committed to material experimentation in painting and photography, MoCA Arlington Resident Artist Stephanie Lane’s solo exhibition Meta Physika showcases new installations and video alongside images from the artist’s photo archive, most of which have never been printed or displayed. Spanning more than eighteen years, from 2007 to the present, the artworks in Meta Physika explore the artist’s ongoing fascination with mysticism and the passage of time.
Meaning “beyond physics” in Greek, Meta Physika displays Lane’s highly experimental approach to art-making across artistic disciplines. Ranging in genre from still life to portraiture, Lane’s images hover between recognizable form and abstraction, undergoing a metamorphosis before the eyes. Lane’s images of birds in flight, moons, bird cages, eggs, cats, flowers and mirrors become potent symbols through repeated use: mysterious riddles without answers. Heavily influenced by Theosophic philosophy, which posits that everything in the physical world is a manifestation of its metaphysical essence, Lane’s artworks in Meta Physika attempt to pierce the veil between this world and invisible realms, inviting the viewer to see beyond the image to its spiritual source.
