Artist Talk at the Innovation Studio: Julia Kwon

THURSDAY / OCTOBER 8 / 6:30PM - 7:30PM

Julia Kwon, Artist in Residence, and MoCA Arlington Senior Curator, Blair Murphy, will discuss Kwon’s practice and the work she’s focused on during the 8-week residency at the Innovation Studio.

Two Thirds of the New AI Data Centers Built or in
Development Since 2022 are in Places Already
Gripped by High Levels of Water Stress, 2025-2026

Julia Kwon sews interpretative Korean object-wrapping cloths (bojagi) to comment on received notions on Asiatic femininity and the interconnected systems of oppression. She embeds patterns from contemporary sociopolitical events into her work to challenge the notion of authenticity and examine the complexities of constructing identities within the context of globalization, cultural hybridity, intersectionality, and the collective struggle for social justice. Her work argues for more capacious possibilities for identity and sense of community.

Talk will begin at 6:30pm.

Location:
MoCA Arlington Innovation Studio + Store: 525 14th Street S, Arlington, VA 22202
Free parking available in the garage after 4pm for up to 3 hours.
