Join MoCA Arlington resident artist Lex Marie and guest speaker Jerrell Gibbs for a virtual artist talk on Wednesday, November 9, 2022 at 6:00 pm. Centering their conversation on Marie’s solo exhibition “Let Them Kids Be Kids”, on view in the Wyatt Resident Gallery through December 18, 2022, Marie and Gibbs will discuss their shared interest in artistic depictions of daily life in the Black community. Lou Haney’s paintings embrace excess. They combine bright colors, busy patterns, and dense interiors in compositions that embrace nostalgia’s many pleasures while acknowledging its risks. In Window Dressing, she presents a new installation that further exaggerates the play within her work between flatness and depth, interior and exterior, organic and synthetic.
Material Matters celebrates the fifty-year legacy of MoCA Arlington’s Artist Studio Program and its role as a launch pad for artists in the Washington, DC region and beyond. Bringing together select residency alumni whose studios at MoCA Arlington date back as early as the 1980s, the exhibition highlights the wide range of artistic practices that have emerged from the program.
